History of Our Peru Mission’s Focus
In 1964, at the invitation of the Pope who encouraged all religious communities to send sisters to Latin America, the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville responded, with missioning four sisters to Peru.
At first, the four sisters lived at a Navy hospital in Callao, with two working at the Navy school and the other two traveling to a poor area to start a school and do parish work. Today, Ursuline Sisters oversee the philosophy and education at St. Angela Merici School.

Since 1987, when two of the sisters traveled into the mountains to begin pastoral work with the peasant farmers, we have continued to form community with the native people of the Andes Mountains.

Ministry in Peru
Impact of Ursuline Sisters’ Efforts: The next step in Peru – The progress we’ve made in Peru is a testament to how much you can and have done to help those touched by our ministries. Your help has gone to:
o Programs for rural ministers who desired to establish churches closer to their villages.
o The associate program in several sites.
o A program to teach local women a trade so they can provide for their families
o A group, made up of families and community members, to aid more than 60 people with disabilities.
o Work with groups of women and youth to give them empowering experiences.
o Provide leadership training with workshops on self-esteem, personal relationships, communication and organizational skills and parenting.
o Provide classes and experiences on women’s spirituality.
o Continue to walk with the rural catechists assisting them with development projects and providing programs that strengthen their faith and permit them to share that with others.

Peru Mission
Your donations at work in Callao and rural areas. Over the years, after beginning and continuing the work in Callao (especially in Angela Merici School), we have moved to two rural areas. The first of the rural areas was in the San Miguel area. After 20 years there, the groups are self-sustaining.
The sisters’ rural ministry moved in 2008 to the Muquiyauyo area (Mu-key-YAU-yo) located in the Jauja district of Peru, high in the Andes Mountains. The peoples’ needs are many. A serious problem exists there with pollution. Also, there is a lack of education and healthcare. Assistance is needed to help women, men and children in their struggles for a better life.
Assessment. Our sisters are there to assess the area’s needs. They hope to contribute to educational, catechetical and sacramental formation of the people. Also, they hope to help with social and human needs. These efforts will make it possible for those living in Muquiyauyo, like those in San Miquel, to provide for themselves one day.
