The History In 1964, at the invitation of the Pope who encouraged all religious communities to send sisters to Latin America, the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville responded, with four sisters traveling to Peru.
At first, the four sisters lived at a Navy hospital in Callao, with two working at the Navy school and the other two traveling to a poor area to start a school and do parish work.
In 1987, two of the sisters traveled into the mountains to begin pastoral work with the peasant farmers. Today, Ursuline Sisters oversee the philosophy and education at St. Angela Merici Parish School. We also:
- work with groups of women and youth to give them empowering experiences.
- provide leadership training with workshops on self-esteem, personal relationships, communication and organizational skills, and parenting
- provide classes and experiences on women?s spirituality
- continue to walk with the rural catechists assisting them with development projects, and providing programs that strengthen their faith and permit them to share that with others.

Your Donations at Work
The next step in Peru - The progress we’ve made in Peru is a testament to how much you can and have done to help those touched by our ministries. The Ursuline Sisters answered a call to go to Peru in 1964, and in the nearly 45 years since, your help has provided programs for rural ministers who desired to establish churches closer to their villages. Your donations helped start an associate program as well as a sacramental program. With your help, we established a program to teach local women a trade so they can provide for their families and a group, made up of families and community members, is now able to aid more than 60 people with disabilities.
These are just some of the things we’ve been able to do with your donations. For the last 20 years of our time in Peru our mission has been in the San Miguel area, but now the groups there are self-sustaining.

New Work to be Done The Sisters’ missionary work is now moving to Muquiyauyo (Mu-key-YAU-yo), located in the Jauja district of Peru. We’ve learned their needs are many. A serious problem exists with pollution. There is a lack of education and healthcare, and children are stricken with tuberculosis. Communities are needed to help women and children in their struggles for a better life.
Our Sisters are there now, assessing the area’s needs and which of them to address immediately. They hope to open a Montessori program to educate the population. Education will make it possible for those living in Muquiyauyo, like those in San Miguel, to provide for themselves one day.
